About the Co-op
Three Tall
Pines is a four piece co-op that relays the emotions of early
American rural life through the sounds of impassioned harmonies
and progressive instrumentations. Dan Bourdeau, Joe
Lurgio, Gian Pangaro and Emily Rideout make up this harmonic
co-op and play to the classic sounds of acoustic guitar,
mandolin, upright bass and fiddle. Their music is
influenced by singer-songwriters from Gillian Welch, Bob
Dylan, and Jimmy Rogers to the bluegrass styles of Bill Monroe
and Ralph Stanley, and the Scottish fiddling of Tim O'Brien and Bonnie Rideout.
Dan Bourdeau is the guitar
player, songwriter and a vocalist of Three Tall Pines. Dan was
born and raised in the historic silver mill town of Taunton,
Massachusetts, and began writing songs to reflect early American
working life. Dan was influenced early on through Bob
Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album, a gift from his brother, and
has expanded to
include Gillian Welch, Jimmy Rogers, Allison Krauss, Roy Acuff
and Karen Dalton. His songwriting has evolved from
earlier tunes including Little Suzie and Jenny Mule, to capturing changing
times in recent songs like Stone Walls. Dan, who now lives
in Cambridge, has recently been
influenced by bluegrass, roots and blues music.
Joe Lurgio is the mandolin
player, songwriter and a vocalist of the co-op. Joe was
born in Providence, Rhode Island and began playing guitar at an
early age. Joe got his first mandolin at age 16 and has been
playing bluegrass style mandolin ever since. His vocal harmony
work adds uniqueness and topography into the music. Joe attended college in
Vermont, where he diversified his musical range into folk and
creative eclectic genres. Joe returned to Rhode Island in 2004
before relocating to Boston, where he is currently expanding
his songwriting style using poetic theory practices.
Gian Pangaro
is the bass and dobro player and a harmony vocalist of the
co-op. He has been a cornerstone of Three Tall Pines since
2005 . Gian joined the Pines after moving back
to his home town of Boston from San Francisco, where he played
upright bass in a Latin dance band and dobro in a bluegrass
band. His musical roots stem from years playing jazz, folk, and
orchestral music. Gian's diverse musical background and bowed
bass abilities add progressive instrumentation to the
co-op's arrangements. Gian's wide assortment of classic pearl snap shirts complete this
traditional co-op.
Emily
Rideout is the violinist, violist and harmony vocalist in the
co-op. Emily, originally from a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, began playing with Three Tall
Pines in fall of 2006. Her first fiddling experience was
playing Scottish tunes with her cousin Bonnie, as they
spent summers at a family cottage on Cliff
Island, Maine. Also a
classically trained violist, she now resides in Cambridge and is an active freelance and chamber
musician. Her influences include Liz Carroll, John Doyle, and
of course Scottish fiddler Bonnie Rideout. Emily adds a
splash of traditional violin to the co-op's progressive
instrumentation and diversifies the sound with elements of viola and Celtic fiddle. Dan and Joe
began playing folk music and songwriting together in the fall of 2004.
Joe and Dan met Gian in 2005 while searching to expand their
music into a trio. Finally, the three met Emily in pursuit
of expanding the instrumentation of the co-op. This
traditional music ensemble has organically grown into a unique
sound that is a bit rough around the edges. Keep your ears
open for this up-and-coming quartet.
